Continuous Hospice Care

Compassionate. Comprehensive. Comforting.

24/7 Hospice Care at Home

When a hospice patient’s symptoms become acute and can’t be managed by the primary caregiver, 24-hour hospice care may be the appropriate course of action. The Interdisciplinary Team (IDT) will consult with the family members and the patient to determine if this is the appropriate level of care needed. During this time, healthcare professionals work in shifts to help stabilize the patient for at least 8 hours a day and up to 24 hours. You can count on our hospice team to provide excellent care during times of medical crisis. Contact us today to learn about our California hospice care services.

How Long Does Continuous Hospice Care Last?

24-hour hospice care is given on a short-term basis and is usually limited to 1-5 days in California. The goal of this level of hospice care is to get symptoms under control so the patient may return to receiving routine hospice care. When the family feels overwhelmed and needs extra help to take care of the patient, continuous hospice care is an excellent option. Throughout the time when 24/7 hospice care at home is provided, the family can relax their role as primary caregivers and focus on being available emotionally for their loved one.

When Is Continuous Hospice Care Appropriate?

When a hospice patient is experiencing a medical crisis, they may be able to receive continuous hospice care on a temporary basis. Some examples of when this level of care is needed include:

  • Uncontrollable pain

  • Excessive nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting

  • Extreme agitation

  • Multiple seizures

  • Respiratory problems

  • Deterioration in consciousness

Other Levels of Hospice Care

Continuous hospice care is one of the four levels of care every California hospice agency must provide. Other hospice care services are as follows.

Routine Hospice Care: This is the most common level of care where patients are cared for in their home, nursing home, or assisted living facility. The care schedule is individualized for each patient.

Inpatient Hospice Care: When the patient’s symptoms cannot be managed at home, they are moved to an inpatient care unit. The goal for this care level is to stabilize the patient and return them home to receive routine care. Inpatient care stays generally last 2-7 days.

Respite Care: When a patient cannot be left alone for extended periods, respite care may be used to relieve caregiver burnout or so family members can attend a family event. Patients receive round-the-clock care for up to 5 days per Benefit Period.
