Relief for Hospice Caregiver Burnout

When family members care for ill loved ones in the end stages of life, it can be stressful and have many challenges. As the illness progresses, higher levels of care are needed which might include frequent medications, wound care, and help with feeding and using the bathroom. On top of all of these demands, family members are faced with the uncertainty of when their loved one will pass. This creates a lot of stress, loss of sleep, depression, and fatigue which is known as caregiver burnout. Respite hospice care helps deter and relieve caregiver burnout. A & H Hospice provides respite hospice care to Southern California residents. Call today to learn more about our range of services.

What Is Respite Hospice Care?

When patients are unable to be left alone for extended periods, our California-based respite hospice caregivers can provide round-the-clock care for short-term periods. Respite care is only used when necessary. Patients receive up to five days of respite care within a Benefit Period.

Some situations in which respite care might be considered necessary include:

  • The primary caregivers are suffering from physical and emotional distress as a result of caring for the patient.

  • Caregivers would like to attend family events such as weddings, graduations, funerals, or similar obligations.

  • Caregivers become ill or injured and cannot care for the patient.

Where Is Respite Hospice Care Provided?

Our respite hospice care is provided in a MediCare-certified facility in Southern California. Respite care is given round-the-clock by a hospice healthcare team of physicians, nurses, certified nursing assistants, and staff members. Healthcare professionals carry out the patient’s hospice care plan, while staff members provide the care that is usually given by the family members. A & H Hospice provides respite care for California residents of Los Angeles, Kern, Orange, Ventura, and San Bernardino counties.

The Importance of Respite Care

When family members become burnt out by the physical demands of caregiving and the stress, depression, and anxiety that accompany it, it’s important to take a break for their health. Respite care allows the primary caregivers to get rest, gain perspective on the situation, and find mental relief that helps foster a more positive outlook. Family members should plan ahead and decide how they will spend their respite time to get the most out of it. Taking the full amount of respite time each Benefit Period will provide a much-needed break to re-energize the hospice caregiver’s physical and mental state.

Four Levels of Hospice Care

Respite Care: This is one of four levels of hospice care provided to patients and their families. This level of care is provided when a family or friend is the caretaker of the patient but needs a respite to travel, due to exhaustion, or some other reason.

Routine Care: In routine care, healthcare professionals provide care in the patient’s residence. Care is scheduled based on the patient’s needs.

Inpatient Care: When symptoms of pain and discomfort cannot be managed at home, the patient may be moved to an inpatient facility.

Continuous Care: When medical needs elevate and the IPU isn’t an option, a hospice team member may be present for at least 8 hours a day.

Benefits of Respite Hospice Care

When hospice patients can’t be left alone for long periods of time, it can make it very difficult for the primary caregiver to attend special events or simply get a break to take care of their own health. Respite care lets family members completely relax and recharge. In order to take care of others, it’s important to also take care of yourself! Hospice nurses and other healthcare professionals will attend to the patient 24/7 for up to five days in a row. Any medical supplies and medical equipment that are needed are provided for the patient.

What You Can Expect

Respite hospice professionals in California will work in shifts to attend to your loved one. They will receive assistance with hygiene, medications, and other tasks of daily living while in the inpatient hospice facility. Meals will be provided to them. You may communicate with the hospice team as much or as little as you need to feel completely comfortable in your absence. Should a medical emergency occur, you will be contacted right away and informed about the emergency actions that have been taken.

How can respite care help someone?

Respite care in California ensures that a hospice caregiver is assigned to tend to your loved one’s needs to provide temporary relief to their primary caregiver. It offers a safe and supervised environment for your loved one, enhancing their quality of life through social interaction and stimulation. Simultaneously, it allows primary caregivers to attend to their own physical, emotional, and spiritual needs without worrying about their loved one.

Caring for a loved one can be physically demanding and emotionally exhausting, leading to stress, burnout, and potential health issues. It can also prevent the primary caregiver from giving the best care for their loved one. Respite care provides caregivers with valuable time off, allowing them to relax, engage in self-care, and maintain their own health and well-being without compromising the well-being of their loved one.

Who is respite care in California best suited to?

Respite care is best suited to individuals who require temporary care and supervision due to a terminal illness, advanced age, or disability, and whose primary caregivers need temporary relief from caregiving responsibilities. It can also benefit those who require specialized care, such as patients with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.
